ST JUTHWARE CELEBRATION FAMILY SERVICE

Come and celebrate the life of our very own Saint - St Juthware, by joining us for a ‘pilgrimage’ around our beautiful church.

The service is on Sunday 14th July 2024 at 11am. Refreshments will be served 12 midday.

All welcome.

We also have a guest speaker, The Reverend Andrew Corness Royal Navy currently based at HMNB Devonport who will give us an insight into working in the Navy, travelling and delivering aid around the world.

Please can any children come and help to show everyone what good hospitality is and help us to learn something about St. Juthware’s life.

We’re going to be inside and outside so please wear suitable clothes for the weather!

May 10th 2023

In the afternoon, a plaque commemorating the late Ken Gove was placed on the kissing gate that he built between the path and churchyard of St Juthware & St Mary’s. For many years, Ken was churchwarden and is remembered with great affection and as a good friend of the church - someone ‘who got things done’.

It was also an evening for giving thanks. Drinks and nibbles were provided for all the volunteers who so willingly give their time to keep the church and its environs running smoothly: the flower arrangers, cleaners, readers, Chimes deliverers, PCC members, church unlockers, sidespeople, bellringers, churchwarden, groundsman, compilers of rotas, bakers and those who host coffee mornings. Daniel expressed his gratitude to everyone for their hard work and gave special thanks to Mary Clegg for everything she does.

Two retirements were separately honoured and presentations made – the first to Tony Diment who has kept the churchyard in such good order for many years and Gru Blomfield, PCC treasurer who, finally, is stepping down.

Harvest Festival Service – Sunday 8 October 2023

The church was a picture, full to bursting with fresh produce and festival flowers in autumn colours. Daniel led the service, traditional in its theme, giving thanks to God for all that we have - and prayers said for those who don’t have enough. Penny and Keith thanked the farmers and producers of our food, whilst highlighting, in the first instance, everything comes from God. Many more provisions were donated to the Lord’s Larder and the children in the congregation did a splendid job bringing them from the back of the church to the altar to be blessed.

Harvest Supper in the village hall – Saturday 7 October

It was a complete sell-out! There wasn’t a spare ticket to be had. The food was amazing and plentiful - no one went home hungry. A huge thank you to the cooks, washers up, providers of flowers, table layers, the team behind the bar and clearers up. The fantastic musical entertainment was provided by Allison Rees and her fellow musicians. It was great to have live music to sing along to and everyone was in good voice. Thanks also to Pete Sutton for setting up the sound system and supplying the in-between music which added greatly to the atmosphere. Lots of prizes had been donated for the raffle and many tickets were sold. The Lord’s Larder benefited from people’s generosity with bags and boxes of much-needed non-perishable provisions. Thank you everyone who contributed.

St Juthware Festival Weekend

2023

Thank you

On a perfect summer’s evening, amongst numerous fabulous floral displays, St Juthware & St Mary’s church was the setting for an evening to say ‘thank you’ to the many volunteers who give their time and distributors of rotas, readers, sidespeople, bell ringers, members of the PCC, the bakers of all good things, and coffee morning hosts. Daniel expressed his gratitude to everyone involved. Glasses were raised and wonderful buffet consumed. A big thank you must also go to Tony Diment for his hard work in keeping the churchyard looking so spruce. It looked particularly beautiful that evening.

Service of celebration

Halstock is very lucky to have its very own saint and every year St Juthware’s life is remembered and celebrated with a special service. On Sunday, 9 July this echoed her hospitality and welcome to visitors and pilgrims. Something Halstock is very good at. The flower festival’s theme of ‘village life’ endorsed it - and some seriously talented arrangers really pushed the boat out with stunning and clever displays. It’s widely known that Juthware was beheaded by her step-brother and, in a nod (pardon the pun) to this, a special vase of flower-stalks only was placed on the plinth next to the Sherborne Missal illumination of her holding her head.

TREASURER REQUIRED

St Juthware and St Mary's Church would be interested in hearing from anyone who is willig to volunteer taking on the role of Treasurer.

Our current Treasurer is standing down and we require a new volunteer to take on this role, which is an all-important position for the continuation of Halstock Church.

The role of Treasurer involves appropriate record keeping and some attendance at PCC meetings throughout the year. Ideally, you would have accounting or bookkeeping experience. You will be supported by both our local team Treasurer and by resources from the Diocese of Salisbury.

Feel free to contact me, without obligation, if you would like to discuss this or have any questions.
