'LEST WE FORGET'
Remembrance Sunday at Halstock
There was no Church service at Halstock on Remembrance Sunday so a wreath of poppies was laid on the altar on behalf of all the village and spotlit throughout the day. In the days leading up to Remembrance Sunday 6 poppy crosses had been attached to the church gate and one each placed on the two war graves in the churchyard as well as one on the church door to commemorate the fallen of our village.
At 12.30 p.m., in common with many other churches throughout the country open bells were rung to commemorate the centenary of the ending of World War 1 and at 7.00 p.m. a group of villagers gathered to light a bonfire in the churchyard to simulate the chain of beacons being lit around the country. Sausage rolls, mince pies and coffee were served and there was a joyful, community atmosphere reminiscent of how the people felt when peace was declared 100 years ago. To add to the occasion, we were honoured by the presence of our very own piper, Trevor Adams. Trevor played The Battle's O'er, which was the piece that was being played earlier by pipers all around the UK at 6.00 a.m. and simultaneously around the world. He also played Sleep Deary Sleep, Flowers of the Forest, and by request, Highland Cathedral. Our thanks go to Trevor and also to our two fire stokers, Ken and Millie, without whose sterling efforts the commemoration would not have been the same.
